It is advisable to file change of status to h4 while in USA, no need to go back to India. After you get your h4 approved then you can go for stamping...
That is good approach, if
1. one is maintaining status at the time of H-4 Change of status application
AND
2. Person is not traveling out of USA in short term future

You can always volunteer i guess..
Can we work for a Charity Organization without getting paid while on H1?
The work would probably be 2 hours a month.

On March 19, 2010, the USCIS announced revised filing instructions and addresses for applicants filing an I-131, the Application for Travel Document.
Beginning March 19, 2010 applicants will have to file their applications at the USCIS Vermont Service Center or at one of the USCIS Lockbox facilities.
If you file the I-131 at the wrong location, the USCIS Service Centers will forward it to the USCIS Lockbox facilities for 30 days, until Monday, April 19, 2010. After April 19, 2010, incorrectly filed applications will be returned to the applicant, with a note to send the application to the correct location.

Hi,
I have an F1 visa that expires on July 11'th 2009.
I am currently on OPT and working. My OPT lasts for another 10 months.
I have just got my H1B application approved in the latest round and am allowed to get it stamped only after October. Therefore between July 11'th (end of F1 visa) and October (stamping of H1), I will be in the US without a valid visa but with a valid OPT.
I need to go to India in June and return on July 10'th- 1 day before F1 visa expires. Am I allowed to re-enter the US with 1 day of visa validity? What documents do I need to carry with me? How should I show them that my H1B is approved and will be stamped in October?
Will they let me back into the country knowing that starting 1 day later I will be without a valid visa until I travel outside the country in October to get my H1B stamped?

Having a pending EB1 I-140 does not in itself confer any status. If you filed an I-485 concurrently, then you are permitted to remain in the US pending adjudication. If you have a currently valid H-1B you may remain or renew pending adjudication.

my visa , H1b expired, but have applied for H1b extension pending since Mar 2007, but i think as long as we are in legal status inside the country it should be fine - my 2 cents.

I am planning to schedule a H1/H4 stamping visa appointment for next month. Here are few questions regarding the vfs web site.
The date I am planning to schedule is still not showing as available. My question
is can I enter all my data and save it and once the date shows up, can I select
the date? How does it work? If not do I need to enter all the data on the day
when it opens up?

This evening, I watched a debate on television between a proponent and an opponent of comprehensive immigration reform (CIR). The proponent emphasized that we need CIR not for the benefit of the undocumented but because it would stimulate the American economy.
